Sir Michael Fallon, the British Defence Secretary, promptly said that Britain would back any retaliatory attack, as it did when Mr. Trump ordered a volley of cruise missiles against Syria in April.
Said Sir Fallon, ''As always in war, the military action you use must be justified, it must be legal, it must be proportionate, it must be necessary.  In the last case it was.  If the Americans take similar action again, I want to be very clear - we will support it.''

President Macron has also thrown his weight behind President Trump.  In a telephone call, the two men agreed on the need for a ''joint response'' to any such attack, the Elysee said.
