GADDAFI FORTUNE YET TO BE SEIZED
The Gaddafi Clan |
There are now fears that the recently freed son of the late tyrant, Saif Gaddafi, may be ready to access up to $30 billion. This amount is just a fraction of the vast sums stolen by his deluded father from the Libyan people. This may happen despite international efforts to freeze the Gaddafi family fortune.
The United Nations security council is currently making efforts to trace billions of dollars looted by the dictator before he was killed in 2011.
The world body has also said that there have been suspicious financial transactions involving accounts linked to the former regime. Much of these accounts are being held in United Arab Emirate (UAE).
Jackson Oldfield, of the Civil Forum for Asset Recovery, said that it had become harder to investigate the stolen funds since civil war broke out in Libya six years ago. Without a functioning government, there was nobody to co-operate with, or return repatriated assets to.
No one knows for sure how much Gaddafi and his family took during his 40-year-rule over Libya, which has vast oil reserves. There have been estimates of about $300 billion.
