CHINA, DEMOCRACY AND HONG KONG
President Xi Jinping and wife in Hong Kong
President Xi Jinping has arrived in Hong Kong to mark two decades of Chinese rule in the former British colony.
This is Xi's first visit as Chinese leader to the special administrative region.
The president encouraged the people to look forward to the future, making sure that the 'one country, two systems' can work smoothly. Hong Kong has limited autonomy and freedoms.
President and the city's chief executive
The area of the city that will host events marking the city's handover from the UK to China is on partial lock-down. Around 11,000 of Hong Kong's 29,000 police officers have been drafted to take part in security arrangements for president Xi's visit.
Considering the high level of security, it appears Chinese authorities are not taking lightly the actions of pro-Hong Kong independence activists who have called for their supporters to gather together and crush Chinese colonialism.
