ALIASES FOR THE WORD
THE BIBLE AS GOD'S VOICE
In Psalm 29 verse 4, the bible is called the voice of the Lord. Generally, there are a few things that are peculiar to a voice. In the first place, a person's voice is always unique. For instance, of the almost eight billion people living on earth today, no two persons sound alike. Secondly, there is always a person behind every voice. This means that a voice usually has an owner. Thirdly, a voice is usually always, in the present. The inference is that at the time a person's voice is heard, it means the person is speaking. Fourthly, like a word, a voice usually contains a message and, finally, a voice is always addressed to someone or to some people.
The bible as the voice of the Lord is unique in every sense of the word in that it speaks about every subject under the sun. As attested to by believers and even unbeliever, its veracity and authority are yet to be successfully disproved. It uncovers the origin of all things, the fate of all things and the position of man in the equation. No other book deals with issues the way the bible does. Also, as the person who owns the voice, the God of the universe is the person behind the bible. He is the source of the words therein. Only the rightful Owner and Sustainer of the universe could have spoken so authoritatively about the rolling spheres the way God does in the bible. For example, in Psalm 115 verse 16, it is written, 'The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S; But the earth He has given to the children of men.'
Also, the Word, being the voice of God, is in the present. This is an indication that the same God who spoke in times past still speaks today and desires to be heard. The inspired writer of the epistle to the Hebrews states in chapter 1 verses 1 and 2, 'God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in the past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.'
The message which the voice of the Lord conveys and which is meant for mankind is the message that reconciles man to God. It is a message of hope, a message of love, a message calling man into fellowship with God. It is also a message that affirms the lordship of Christ. It states very clearly, without any doubt, that all knees shall bow and that all tongues will eventually confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
Considering that God only speaks to mankind today through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, all other prophets who claim to be speaking to people on God's behalf, without Christ's authority, are liars and all those who listen to and follow such prophets are lost.
Let us now take a look at samples of what Christ is saying to people in the world today.
1. To people who have no one to turn to and are perplexed about life, Christ is saying, ''Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.'' Matthew 11 verses 28, 29 and 30.
2. To those who seek life eternal and who want to dwell with God forever, Christ is saying, ''Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My Word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death into life.'' John 5 verse 24
3. To those who already know Christ and who want to impact the world for Him, Christ is saying, ''You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.'' Matthew 5 verse 13.
4. To all His disciples who would want to harvest souls for the soon coming King, Christ is saying, ''Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even the end of the age.'' Matthew 28 verses 19 and 20.
5. To all Christians who are hanging in there and are under tremendous pressure to give up, Christ is saying, ''Behold,'' I am coming quickly,! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.'' Revelation 3 verse 11.
6. To all saints who are doing the Lord's bidding but are concerned about happenings in their environment and in the world, Christ is saying, ''Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.'' Mark 6 verse 50.
7. To all God's children who are looking forward to Christ's appearing, Christ is saying, ''And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.'' Revelation 22 verse 12.
