THE BIBLE AS SWORD

It was an inspired Paul, the apostle, who referred to the Word as the Sword of the Spirit.  In Ephesians 6 verse 17, he writes, 'Take the helmet of salvation and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.'  In times past, the sword was the principal weapon used to fight during wars.  When the blessed apostle described the bible as the Sword of the Spirit, certainly, he was alluding to it as a spiritual weapon of warfare.

The Christian or anyone else, for that matter, lives in a world where spiritual warfare is a reality.  Every aspect of man's life is always under attack: His peace, his sanity, his family, his welfare, his prosperity and his very life. This simply means that, for as long as he is alive, man is engaged in spiritual warfare.  It does not matter whether he believes it or not.

There can be no doubt that our most potent weapon of spiritual warfare is the Word, that is, the bible.  It is probably the most potent spiritual assault weapon possessed by Christians.  In Hebrews 4 verse 12, we read, 'For the Word is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart..'

This weapon is included in the weapons that Paul refers to in 2 Corinthians 10 verses 2, 4 and 5.  These verses state as follows: 'For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.'  We should never forget that it was this weapon of the Word that the Lord Jesus Christ Himself used to defeat the devil during His temptations in the wilderness.  Therefore, if the Lord Jesus could find this weapon most effective during His battles with the tempter, so can we.

It can be concluded, then, that one cannot afford not to reconcile oneself to the reality that we are at war.  This means that we must get it right.  The only hope of victory for man is to fight with the Sword of the Spirit.
