| Uh oh (Picture:NASA) The latest news from the scientists is that in five billion years' time, our sun will expand to a hundred times the size it is now, and anything that still lives on the surface of our planet will be blasted into oblivion. It is also believed that the moon will 'fall inwards' towards us once Earth's rotation has slowed to match the moon's orbital period. This is all according to Dr Jason Barnes, a planetary scientist at the university of Idaho. Hear Dr Barnes, 'Eventually, it would get so close that it would spiral inward, dissipating its orbital kinetic energy in a spectacular collision and merger with the Earth. The final end-state of the tidal evolution in the Earth-moon system will indeed be the inspiral of the moon and its subsequent collision and accretion onto earth.' While we must thank God for science and how it has benefitted the human race, science fails to tell us what we need to do in order to be prepared for the end of all things. Therefore, we need to ask ourselves: What does the bible, God's Word, really say about all these things? An inspired apostle Peter, in 2 Peter 3 verses 10, 11, 12 and 13 had the following to say, 'But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.' |
