The British embassy has occupied nine acres of central Bangkok since the 1920s

In a fast changing world, the British Foreign Office sees the need to modernise properties elsewhere, including fitting new electrical wiring in the Paris embassy and refurbishing the embassies in Cairo and Delhi.  It has therefore decided to sell the historic British embassy building in the centre of Bangkok for £420 million to raise funds for its modernisation projects.

The properties to be sold include the embassy itself, the ambassador’s residence and the nine acres of gardens in which the buildings sit.  The diplomats will then move into offices in the 29-storey AIA Sathorn Tower in the city centre.

The compound is being sold to a joint venture consortium of Hongkong Land, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group, and Central Group, the leading retail and service business in Thailand.
