Otto Warmbier was imprisoned by the Kim regime and died after his return to the US
Fred Warmbier whose son, Otto, was returned to the US in a coma after 17 months in a Korean prison is to attend the Olympic opening ceremony in South Korea as a guest of the US vice-president, Mike Pence.
Otto was sentenced to hard labour after he was accused of stealing a poster during a holiday to Pyongyang. He died in October 2016 after being sent home following several months of negotiations during which time his family said they had no access to information about him.
Significantly, tensions on the Korean peninsula had shown signs of cooling before the Games, which begin on Friday. Pyongyang has slowed its rate of missile tests and athletes from the North and South will march under the same flag at the opening ceremony.
