Iran : Headscarf protests escalate

Iranian women face two months in prison if caught without a headscarf in public

Iranian women to spend at least two months in jail if caught without a headscarf in public

A large number of women have been charged with public order offences and have been referred to the state prosecutor’s office.  These were those who appeared in public without a headscarf.

There have been protests against the country’s Islamic dress codes.

According to Tasnim, an Iranian news agency, the 29 women seized were part of the anti-headscarf campaign known as White Wednesdays.

The protest movement was started by Masih Alinejad, a New York-based Iranian women’s activist. At first she called for women to share photos of themselves wearing white headscarves on Wednesdays in protest at Iran’s dress restrictions.

Some women removed their scarves and held them in the air in protest

Iran’s chief prosecutor, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, dismissed the protests as trivial and childish. He added that those flouting the country’s strict headscarf rules must have been incited by foreigners.
