Nicolás Maduro will be the Socialist Party’s only candidate for a new term

55-year-old Mr Maduro has now been in the saddle for four years. During his time Venezuela’s economy has shrunk by more than a third and inflation has risen to more than 2,500 per cent. This has caused millions of Venezuelans to emigrate.

For some strange reasons, Mr Maduro is seeking another six-year term. The Venezuelan parliament is controlled by Nicolás Maduro’s Socialist Party. It decreed yesterday that the presidential election should be held before April 30.
The embattled president faces global condemnation and accusations that the voting system is rigged.
Sadly, Maduro is the clear favourite to win the vote, as a divided and demoralised opposition struggles to unite behind a candidate.
