The 3,000-year-old temple was targeted during the fighting that is raging over Afrin in northwest Syria.
Reacting angrily to the barbaric act, Syria's antiquities department called the destruction an act of “hatred and barbarism of the Turkish regime against the Syrian identity and against the past, present and future of the Syrian people”.
The structure was said to have been modelled on Solomon’s Temple as it is described in the Bible, and is thought to have been built in three stages between 1,700BC and 740BC.
