Syria, your name is babel
The conflagration that has engulfed Syria is becoming even more confusing as all sides in the civil war do not only appear to be fighting themselves but also each other.
Turkey is bombarding the city of Afrin which is a stronghold of the Kurdish YPG militia. Remember that Turkey was an old NATO ally of the US while YPG militia is a new US ally. Also, consider that YPG was an old Russian ally. It has now locked horns with Turkey, Moscow's new friend. Throw into the equation the fact that two groups of former Free Syrian Army fighters are at each other's throat: some fighting for Turkey while others are fighting alongside the YPG.
Turkey is expressing its right not to have its interests ignored in the Syrian war. Erdogan’s stated aim is clear enough: to demolish an enclave on Turkey's border of the YPG, the Syrian affiliate of Ankara’s greatest domestic enemy, the PKK guerrilla group.
Overall, it appears Mr Assad has regained control of most of the country but he needed Russian help so agreed to Russian arrangements for establishing the geopolitical re-arrangement of his broken state.
