Robots entrusted to drive cars, diagnose patients and decide prison sentences

As far as the British prime minister is concerned, robots are not mere mechanical or technological contraptions, they must be capable of imbibing moral lessons.  They must therefore be taught morals so they can be trusted to make potentially life and death decisions.

Mrs May is to warn that as machines swoop in to carry out more jobs they must also be taught how to make ethical decisions.  She will make the warning in a major speech on AI this Thursday in Davos, a summit of political and business leaders.
Theresa May (pictured in No10 last night) will warn that as machines swoop in to carry out more jobs they must also be taught how to make ethical decisions. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to drive cars, diagnose patients and decide on prison sentences around the world

Concerning ethics and morality, for example, experts have pointed out that self-driving cars may have to choose between running over a group of pedestrians or causing a deadly crash to avoid them.

The prime minister wants Britain to be a world leader in new technology.  In his Budget last year chancellor Philip Hammond announced plans to roll out driverless scars in Britain by 2021.

The PM is also expected to announce detailed plans to create a National Centre for Data Ethics to provide guidance and consult on the regulation of AI, the Daily Telegraph reported.
