Abdel Fattah al Sisi of Egypt uses military to clamp down on opposition
General Sami Anan is the fifth potential challenger to General Sisi to be blocked by the authorities or encouraged to change their mind about running in the presidential elections taking place from March 26-28.
Supporters of the general said that he was held yesterday after being called to Cairo to be questioned over his political ambitions.
General Sami Anan
Anan launched his presidential bid a week ago by posting a video on Facebook promising to “ensure rights and freedoms, and preserve the spirit of justice and the values of the republican system”.
Obviously, General Sisi saw Anan's statement as a clear attack on him. The Egyptian president has grown increasingly authoritarian as the economic crisis afflicting Egypt since he came to power four and a half years ago worsens.

Among those who want to challenge President Sisi for power but whose wings have been clipped are Mohammed Anwar al-Sadat, Colonel Ahmed Konswa and Khaled Ali, a human rights lawyer.
