McCabe became a lightning rod for White House criticism of the FBI

Any discerning observer must have known that Andrew McCabe's days at the FBI were numbered after the acrimonious departure of his former boss, James Comey.  He was probably seen as the other side of the same coin.

It was therefore hardly surprising that the 20-year FBI veteran decided to quit days after it emerged that Mr Trump had demanded to know how he had voted.  Mr McCabe had reportedly confirmed to friends that he also felt pressure from Christopher Wray, the head of the bureau, to leave.

Mr Wray, who was appointed by Mr Trump last August, has overseen a sweeping revamp of the FBI leadership, with the bureau’s chief of staff and general counsel also recently leaving.

Mr McCabe was at the centre of the two contentious FBI investigations.  After the bureau ruled that Mrs Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state had been careless but not criminal, Republicans said that she had been given favourable treatment.
