Andre Villas-Boas, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager, was taken to hospital for tests after crashing head first into a sand dune and out of the Dakar Rally.

The Portuguese was quick to post an Instagram message in which he reassured his army of fans. It said: “Just to tell everyone that both me and [co-driver] Ruben [Faria] are safe and well and back in the bivouac. We jumped off a dune and crashed the car nose first. The Dakar unfortunately is finished for us. Better luck next time! Thank you all for your kind messages of support.”

The 40-year-old was fulfilling a childhood ambition by driving in the 9000-kilometre race from Peru to Argentina.

Villas-Boas left his lucrative job in charge of Shanghai SIPG in November to race in the rally for Team Overdrive.  He has been linked with the Paris Saint-Germain's manager's job.  He insisted there had been no contact with PSG but he remained friendly with the people there.

“I still want to do a few years in Europe in one of the big leagues so I will wait patiently for the right opportunity,” he said.
“No rush whatsoever. I still have the ambition to coach in Japan. The Asia experience is very interesting on a professional and personal level so I still hope to get back there one day.”
