Jet Airways said the pilots had a “misunderstanding”
There have been concerns that an Indian airline put at risk the lives of over 300 passengers on a recent flight. This was as a result of the unprofessional actions of two of its pilots.
It was reported that the two pilots engaged in a mid-air fight in the cockpit during which both crew members briefly abandoned the controls while flying from London to Mumbai on New Year’s Day.
There were unconfirmed reports that the two pilots were in a relationship.
Jet Airways is now investigating claims that a male pilot attacked the female captain during a flight with 324 passengers on board. The woman fled the cockpit in tears before she was persuaded to return by colleagues and the male co-pilot also briefly left the cockpit, leaving the controls unattended.
Flight 9W 119 left Heathrow at 10am on January 1 and was at cruising altitude, about 35,000ft, when the incident occurred.
“Shortly after the plane took off, the two pilots had a fight,” one witness told TheTimes of India. “The co-pilot slapped the lady commander and she left the cockpit in tears. She stood in the galley sobbing.
“The cabin crew tried to comfort her and send her back to the cockpit, but in vain. The co-pilot also kept buzzing the crew [over the intercom], asking them to send the second pilot back.”
When the woman failed to return to the cockpit, the co-pilot also left the controls to retrieve her, a violation of flight safety protocol.
The captain was eventually persuaded to resume command of the aircraft but soon after both pilots returned to the cockpit another altercation occurred and she fled the controls a second time.
