Surgeons, multi-tasking and contempt for human life

A surgeon took multi-tasking to a dangerous level when, at the time she was operating on a New York woman, he was also taking an examination.

The woman has now sued the doctor who took a Spanish test using his mobile phone while carrying out surgery on her.
The woman, 70-year-old Mary Edwards, went to Eric Fishman, a vascular surgery specialist in New York, for two operations on her varicose veins.

It was during the second operation when, under local anaesthetic, that Ms Edwards noticed that Dr Fishman was handling his phone and speaking Spanish and English into it.

When the doctor was later accosted over the incident, he confirmed that he had been taking a Spanish test.  He went on to say that the time of her operation was the only chance available for him to take the oral exam.  He explained that he had many Spanish-speaking clients and needed to be certified in the language.

Even though Ms Edward's surgery was a success she said that she felt panic and suffered severe emotional distress as a result of the surgeon's actions, Mitchell Baker, her lawyer, said.

The lawyer added that his client was also under the impression that Dr Fishman could not see properly during the procedure.
While he was doing the opreation, Dr Fishman is alleged to have said to someone via his phone that he suffered from night sweats, diabetes and blurred vision.

The documents state that Ms Edwards is seeking financial compensation.
