Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: 'Israel will not tolerate Iranian presence in Syria'
Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, has reported that Israel fired several missiles at a military base that Iran is building close to the country's capital, Damascus, on Saturday.
As a result of the Israeli airstrike over Syria, twelve members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard have been killed, according to Arabic media.
While there has been no official confirmation of the fatalities from either Syria or Iran, the names of those killed were reported on a messaging app connected to the Iranian military, according to Lebanon’s Al-Mustaqbal TV and the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya network.
The targeted base is 31 miles from the Israeli border.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned in a video on Saturday night that Israel would not tolerate an Iranian presence in Syria, but Israel has yet to comment on the alleged airstrike
There was no official comment from Israel, but in a video published on Saturday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would not tolerate an Iranian presence in Syria.
He said: 'Let me reiterate Israel’s policy: We will not allow a regime hell-bent on the annihilation of the Jewish state to acquire nuclear weapons.
'We will not allow that regime to entrench itself militarily in Syria, as it seeks to do, for the express purpose of eradicating our state.'
President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani
Last month, the BBC reported that Iran is trying to establish a permanent military base inside Syria, according to a Western intelligence source.
