Tech giant Google is developing a smart device that uses technology to help parents keep an eye on their children at home.
According to the plans, the system will disable electrical sockets and text parents if a child appears to be in trouble.  It will also alert parents with flashing lights and audio warnings such as “Your child is approaching an electrical outlet” and “Your child is alone for ten minutes”.

The data will be sent from the device to an app on a parent’s mobile phone.  It “may complement or replace conventional methods for protecting unattended children in the home”, according to the European patent submitted by Google.

The system is to have facial-recognition software linked to a webcam and will use advanced learning to “recognise” who is a family member. Parents will also be able to access the various features using voice activation; for example, instructing the “virtual nanny” to deactivate smart electrical sockets in another room.

The system could be linked to smart household items that may be hazardous to children such as fireplaces, balcony doors or even carbon monoxide detectors.

Google's smart home range already allows users to turn off their lights, heat rooms and check who is at the front door but soon it could also be used as a virtual babysitter.
