The Koch brothers in a bid to take over Time
It emerged last week that the Koch brothers have put between $500 million and $600 million behind a $2 billion bid for Time Inc, the publisher.
Daniel Schulman, author of Sons of Wichita, a biography of the brothers, said, ''They're very much interested in shaping the way people think and mainstream libertarian ideas. But they would only buy Time if they felt like it complemented their other businesses and they could turn a profit. I can't see them trying to influence the management of Sports Illustrated, Coastal Living or similar titles. But a title like Time magazine has great prestige. If they were to try to shape opinions through titles like Time and Fortune, it would probably manifest itself through the people they hired to oversee those publications.
It was not immediately clear what influence the brothers would have, if any, over Time Inc if a deal went through. It could give them influence over Time and Fortune, magazine titles that reach the elite, as well as a further 31 American magazine brands and 47 British British brands.
