A German court has deemed 96-year-old Oskar Groening, a former Nazi guard, fit enough to go to prison
Oskar Groening to spend four years behind bars for his role in the murder of 300,000 people at a Nazi death camp in Poland
A FORMER Nazi SS guard nicknamed the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" - now aged 96 - has been deemed fit enough to go to prison, a court has heard.
Groening had not started serving his sentence because authorities were said to be worried about his health.
In August, prosecutors said that a medical examination showed the OAP was fit to go to prison, but Groening's lawyer argued against the report.
However, on Wednesday, the court insisted he will be given appropriate nursing and medical care when he's banged up.
The court in Celle, northern Germany ruled: "Based on expert opinion, the superior regional court finds that the convicted individual is fit to serve out the term despite his advanced age."
Groening's initial court battle in 2015 was classed as one of the last major Holocaust trials, because more than 70 years have passed since the death camps were liberated, and many involved have died.
Oskar Groening started work as an accountant at Auschwitz in 1942 aged 21, sorting and counting the money taken from those killed or used as slave labour, and shipping it back to his Nazi superiors in Berlin.
On several occasions he performed "ramp duty", processing deportees as they arrived by rail in cattle cars.
In a German court, he said he was morally guilty and described himself as an enthusiastic Nazi at the time.
