Suleiman Kerimov, a billionaire friend of Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has been taken into custody on suspicion of tax evasion on the French Riviera.  This has not gone down well in the Kremlin.

Once referred to as ''Russia's Jay Gatsby,'' Kerimov was expected to be placed under formal investigation in Nice.  This had to do with allegations that he is the secret owner of four villas estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of Euros on the Cap d'Antibes.

These villas include Villa Hier, the setting for the comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Michael Caine.
Kerimov is estimated to be worth around $6 billion.

The Russian president's spokesman reiterated that Russia is making ''maximum efforts'' to defend the businessman.

Russia has said that France had no right to detain him at Nice airport because he was travelling on the diplomatic passport he holds as a member of the Russian senate.
