During his election campaign, President Trump was aggressive towards Japan. For
example, some of the then presidential candidate's demands were that Japan would have
to
give more than the billions of dollars it pays in support of US military bases, that it should
develop its own nuclear weapons and that, the Japanese should buy more American cars.
Mr Trump's rhetoric seemed to have paid off. Scarcely had the US election been won than
the Japanese prime minister was on the phone offering congratulations. Shinzo Abe was
also the first world leader to visit New York, carrying gifts of expensive golf equipment.
There were more gifts for the president as he arrived in Japan yesterday. There was a
white hat with the words ''Donald and Shinzo : Make Alliance Even Greater.' There was
food : not Japanese delicacies but burgers made with US beef.

One year after the US election, any concerns in Japan seemed to have receded. Mr Trump
has declared the US-Japan Security Treaty ''a cornerstone'' and hailed a treasured
partnership.
