A daring soldier decided to act.  Fortunately for him, he managed to get away in one piece.  He had driven for his life as bullets thudded into his shoulder, elbow and guts.  Then his military 4 by 4 lurched into a ditch.  Dehydrated, wounded and groaning, he crawled across the line that separated salvation from doom.  He is now in hospital as doctors battle to save his life.

Giving an update yesterday, the doctor treating the North Korean soldier said that he is in critical condition.  This was a day after making a brave dash across the border with the South.  The spot from where the soldier defected was once described by former US president as ''the scariest place on earth.

Speaking to reporters at Ajou University Hospital, where the soldier is being treated, Dr Lee Cook-jong said, ''He has at least six gunshot wounds on his body and the penetrating wound in the abdomen is the most serious.  His organs are extremely damaged, we do not know for how long he can hold up.  We will have to ride out the crucial moments over the next ten days.''
