Slobodan Praljak drank what he said was poison upon hearing the life sentence verdict
Erstwhile Bosnian Croat commander Slobodan Praljak drinks from small bottle moments after judges confirm 20-year sentence
Dramatically, the final hearing at a United Nations war crimes hearing had to be halted when a former Bosnian Croat military chief claimed to have taken poison.
Protesting his innocence, Slobodan Praljak yelled, "I am not a war criminal!" and appeared to drink from a small bottle, seconds after judges reconfirmed his 20-year prison sentence for involvement in a campaign to drive Muslims out of Bosnia in the early 1990s.
The judge immediately suspended the hearing after Praljak drank from a small bottle
Presiding Judge Carmel Agius had quashed some of Praljak's convictions but left his sentence unchanged.
Agius quickly halted the hearing at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
It could not be confirmed whether Praljak had truly taken poison or the status of his health.
Today's hearing was the final case at the groundbreaking tribunal before it closes its doors next month.
