As the largest ancient palace in the world and China's most glorious, the Forbidden City sits in the capital city of Beijing.

According to history, the Forbidden City was home to at least 24 Chinese emperors during their reigns.

With the construction beginning in 1406 having been ordered by the emperors of the Ming Dynasty, the complex was completed in 1420.  The Ming emperors held sway until the Manchus took possession in 1644.

The all-powerful emperors of China ruled from the impressive fortress until the abdication of the last Qing emperor in 1912 at the creation of the Republic of China.
