The City of London office of Locke Lord, an American law firm, has been fined a sum of N500,000.  This is for failing to prevent a lawyer at its London office from being involved in transactions ''that bore the hallmarks of dubious financial arrangements or investment schemes.''

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal imposed the fine.

Managing partners at the office admitted breaches of the professional rules.  The solicitor at the centre of the case was named as Jonathan Irvin Denton.

The City office of Locke Lord, which has headquarters in Texas, also admitted that the firm had failed to prevent Mr Denton ''from directing or requesting payments into, and transfers or withdrawals from, the firm's client account which were not related to an underlying legal transaction or a service forming part of the firm's normal regulated activities.''
