Golfer-in-Chief

The proportion of Donald Trump's presidency spent playing golf

It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise by now, but we’ll point it out

anyway. Remember how Donald Trump laid into Barack Obama for spending so many

weekends playing golf? ‘Can you

believe that, with all the problems and difficulties facing the US, President Obama spent the

day playing golf. Worse than Carter,’ the then businessman said in 2014.

Well, someone has

worked out the amount of time Trump himself spends on the course. In October, that would

be… every weekend. And out of 282 days in office so far, 76 were spent at his golf

properties, according to NBC’s tracker – more than one in three of every day he’s been

Commander in Chief. This Sunday he went to his club the Trump National Golf Club in

Virginia for the fourth weekend in a row. The time before that, he couldn’t make it as he was

busy with the Presidents Cup golf tournament in New Jersey.

 Politfact calculates that by the

same stage his his presidency, Obama had spent 22 days playing golf as opposed to

Trump’s 29.

 However, Trump’s administration are often

reluctant to confirm whether the President has played golf at his residences, saying he

spends a lot of his time there doing work. Many presidents play golf as a way to switch off

from the demands of the job. But if that’s the plan, maybe don’t campaign on the fact you

won’t.
