Fire at Grenfell Tower, West London

Yesterday, it took just 15 minutes for a strange fire to engulf a London 24-story tower block.  The devastating result is that, at least, 12 people got killed and 18 critically injured.  Burning tenants, who looked like walking flames, jumped from upper floors.  Desperate parents dropped their screaming children from windows in order to save them.  Some residents fled using ropes and parachutes made from sheets.

As at last night, dozens were still missing.  It is strange that in modern London fire alarms in a building could fail to go off.  It is even more strange that the block had only one set of stairs and that there were no sprinklers.  A total of 78 people were treated in hospitals including some of the 250 fire fighters who raced to Grenfell Tower in West London before 1 am.
