A SWISS village has banned tourists from taking pictures as
they say the scenery is too beautiful for social media.
The inhabitants of Bergün/Bravuogn near St Moritz believe
that photographs of the local landscape will make people
who are not able to visit feel miserable.
Locals passed a law banning pictures during a municipal assembly
on Monday, according to the Local.
Anyone caught getting snap happy will be issued a five franc (£4) fine.
A statement on the Bergün tourist office website explains that
the vote was taken because locals are concerned about the
happiness of people who would see the images on sites
like Facebook and Instagram.
It reads: “It is scientifically proven that beautiful vacation
photos on social media make the viewers unhappy,
because they themselves cannot be there.
“The municipality of Bergün / Bravuogn wants to prevent this
because of the happiness of all people and because it has a
particularly picturesque landscape to offer.”
They are instead hoping that people will come to see
the town with their own eyes instead of looking at it
 through social media.

Any money raised from the fine collection will be put into
protecting the alpine environment.
The tourism office has already removed all pictures from its
Facebook and Twitter pages, which has caused a backlash on
social media. If the vote was a marketing stunt to attract new
tourism to the town then they have certainly succ succeeded
in getting people’s attention, but it has also angered some people.

Many have given the village a one star review on
the Facebook page and vowed not to visit as a result of the ban.

One of those was Andreas Zürcher who said: “This autumn
we have planned a weekend in Bergün with our Fotoclub.
“The workshop, respectively the overnight stay (15-20 persons)
we will now stop NOT in Bergün.
“Fortunately, there are other Swiss villages where we are welcome.”
Another called Bella Braun said: “Visit, spend money but
 you can not make reminders!”
