TYRANT RELEASED

Hosni Mubarak
Erstwhile dictator, Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, has now been set free.  He had been detained since 2013 but had been out of power for six years.  The former general had been exonerated from blame for the deaths of hundreds of protesters in the hands of the country's police in the 2011 popular revolts also known as the Arab Spring.  He was cleared by the nation's top appeals court.

The nation's activists believe that Mubarak's release shows that very little has changed in the country when it comes to democracy, justice and the fight against corruption.  There is even a feeling that President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi's government which has jailed thousands of opponents is no better than that of Mubarak.

In addition to charges of complicity in the protesters' deaths, Mubarak faced accusations of stealing millions of dollars from the state.  His sons, Gamal and Alaa, were also charged with embezzling millions of dollars through their dealings with government.
