FBI release chilling new images of the Pentagon in the aftermath of 9/11
The FBI have today released chilling new images of the Pentagon in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The previously unpublished images were released to show the sheer devastation of the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
The Pentagon was hit when Al-Qaeda terrorists flew American Airlines flight 77 into the side of the building, killing 184 people.
All 59 passengers and crew on board were also killed along with the five terrorists.
It was the first significant attack on a government building in Washington for almost 200 years.
Chilling pictures show FBI officers standing next to a wall in complete shock at the devastation around them.
Others show firefighters desperately attempting to extinguish a huge fireball caused by the plane crashing into the building.
The intensity of the blaze reportedly melted windows, computers and even steel girders.
Officers spent days trying to recover bodies hidden within the debris.
The total number of people killed in the 9/11 attacks was 2,996 while more than 6,000 were injured.
It is considered the worst single act of terrorism in history.
